Driving 'Show Me Tell Me' Test
The 'Show Me Tell Me' test takes place during your practical driving test. The idea is very simple: you must demonstrate that you understand some basic principles of checking and operating a car, so that you'll be safe on the road. You may be asked to tell the examiner how you would carry out a simple safety task, or asked to demonstrate one. For example, the examiner might ask you: "Open the bonnet and tell me how you'd check the engine has sufficient oil".
There are 20 possible questions and you'll be asked just two of them. All 20 questions and answers can be found on the gov.uk website for revision. Below, is some extra help with questions 12-20 relating specifically to the Toyota Yaris you'll be driving with East Coast Automatic.
Before You Begin Driving
Open the Bonnet and Tell Me...
...How you’d check that the engine has sufficient oil.
Identify dipstick/oil level indicator, describe check of oil level against the minimum and maximum markers. (A)
...How you’d check that the engine has sufficient engine coolant.
Identify high and low level markings on header tank where fitted or radiator filler cap, and describe how to top up to correct level. (B)
...How you’d check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.
Identify reservoir, and check level against high and low markings. (C)

When It's Safe to Do So...
...can you show me how you wash and clean the rear windscreen?
Push the stalk forwards, away from yourself for 2 seconds (D)
...can you show me how you wash and clean the front windscreen?
Pull the stalk back, towards yourself for 2 seconds (E)
...can you show me how you’d switch on your dipped headlights?
Twist the end of the stalk forwards by 2 clicks (F)
...can you show me how you’d set the rear demister?
Press the button (G)
...can you show me how you’d operate the horn?
Press and hold the centre circle of the steering wheel (H)
...can you show me how you’d demist the front windscreen?
