East Coast Automatic Driving Licence Guide

The following is our simple overview of the steps towards getting your Full UK Driving Licence. Don't worry if there's anything you don't quite understand - we're here to help you!

- STEP 1 -

Check your eligibility to drive

- STEP 2 -

Complete the online application to get a photo-card Provisional Driving Licence

- STEP 3 -

  1. Download or buy a copy of The Highway Code and study it to learn the rules of driving on British roads

  2. Begin practical driving tuition with a DSA ADI instructor (we hope you'll choose East Coast Automatic). You may take as few or as many driving lessons as you and your instructor feel are necessary to prepare for your practical driving test.

  3. Learn the answers to a set of basic vehicle operation questions. Your instructor will help you to confidently remember these, so that you can answer your driving test examiner when asked just two of them.

  4. Prepare for your two-part theory test. Part 1 is a hazard perception test, based on your responses to viewing a series of video clips. Part 2 is a multiple-choice question and answer test.

- STEP 4 -

Book and manage your two-part theory test. For East Coast Automatic students, the test is normally taken a

DVSA office in Scarborough.

- STEP 5 -

Book and manage your driving practical test. IMPORTANT: You must agree the date of your test with your instructor before making the booking. Your instructor will have a good idea of when you have reached the required standard for success. It can be tempting to rush into your test, especially to take advantage of cancellations, but this often lowers your chances of passing first time. We will also need to mutually ensure that your instructor and car will be available on the day of your test.

East Coast Automatic have a pass rate that’s higher than the National average and we can help you to book your practical test with better confidence.

- STEP 6 -

After passing the test, your examiner will take your photo-card provisional driving licence and give you a pass certificate. You can start driving without 'L' plates or your instructor as soon as you are given the certificate.

The examiner will arrange for your full Driving Licence to be posted to you. You must keep your pass certificate until your new Licence arrives.

Feeling ready? Completing steps 1 and 2 is easy and should only take a few minutes. Then, get your digital or printed copy of The Highway Code and contact East Coast Automatic for your first driving lesson! We’ll be pleased to help you with all of the rest and we look forward to hearing from you!
